By now, you’ve probably seen some of the headlines about the $1.5 billion deal between Verizon and the U.S. government for the next generation of its NextGen cellular network.
The deal includes $1 billion in funding for NextGen and the purchase of 5 gigabits of spectrum, according to the FCC.
However, there are some other details you might not have heard about.
Verizon is offering the new ram to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to upgrade its existing spectrum and other critical infrastructure.
Verizon’s ram has also been used to upgrade fiber optic cables for the city of Atlanta and to upgrade Wi-Fi and LTE networks in Boston, New York, and San Francisco.
This is the first time the FCC has used a new, “fiber-to-the-home” (FTTH) technology to upgrade the existing infrastructure.
The FCC is now looking to license this technology to other carriers in the future.
Here’s how the ram works: Once a fiber optic cable is constructed, it’s typically installed in a house, apartment, or other building to deliver a faster, higher-speed internet connection.
Verizon also used the ram to upgrade a fiber-optic cable in the United Kingdom, the FCC reported.
The government paid for the ram because it was necessary for Nextgen, which is intended to provide better wireless and wireless broadband access for millions of homes in the U to access the internet.
Verizon wants to use the ram as an example of the type of technology that can be licensed to other telecoms.
The ram has been used before to help upgrade the transmission of data in a fiber network, said Michael Osterholm, senior vice president of government affairs at the American Communications Manufacturers Association.
“We believe that it’s an example to use,” Osterhams said.
Verizon plans to use about $1 million in the ram’s value to upgrade NextGen to 5G speeds, according the FCC, but Osterhausen said the value of the ram would increase with more use.
“It’s the value to the public that’s the most important part of any technology,” he said.
“But we do expect it to be available for use in the years ahead.”
Verizon’s new ram is a “super-duper fiber-to the-home technology,” according to a Verizon spokesman.
The new ram will have a capacity of about 25 megabits per second, or 10 gigabit per second per channel.
The RAM is designed to be used for the same reasons as its predecessors, Osterheit said.
The technology was originally developed to deliver high-speed wireless data in the first half of this century, according Osterhans.
“I’m not sure that the value is really the same as it was,” he added.
“There’s been some improvement in that aspect, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case.”
The ram is designed for the first 5G generation of wireless technology.
NextGen will be used in “all areas where we expect it will have significant commercial potential,” Oesterholm said.
But in some areas, the ram is expected to be useful only for high-bandwidth applications.
“You’re going to see some really large applications,” Oterholm said, adding that it could be used to deliver speeds of up to 100 gigabitts per second.
But the new tech is also being used for other purposes, like delivering high-quality video or gaming, or providing a more reliable connection for home entertainment devices.
The federal government is expected in the next year or so to decide whether to license the technology to a third party.
Verizon has also said it plans to provide free ram to schools and colleges for a period of time.
“What we are doing here is providing this technology for free to schools in a variety of ways,” Ostershans said.
